Gem Empathy Award

  • In previous years, the Gem Empathy Award was only open to those exhibiting in the design gallery, for 2018, Gem-A opened the awards up to all IJL exhibitors

Gem-A provided a gemstone and asked designers to do the following: create a design that they feel celebrates the beauty of the gemstone and shows it off to its best advantage. Designers could use any material and the design can be hand sketched or created using CAD.

We're excited to reveal the winners of the Gem Empathy Award 2018 are Tivon Fine Jewellery!

  • Judging and Criteria

The judging panel is made up of four representatives from the jewellery industry and from Gem-A. They will judge the designs based on the evaluation criteria below:

    • Relationship between stone and design
    • Practicality of design
    • Style and beauty

    Judging procedures:

    • All designs will be reviewed independently by each judge.  If the judges do not feel that the design can be considered for the award the judge will clearly mark this on the judging form with a No.  Any designs that receive a No from ALL judges will be eliminated from the competition.
    • The remaining entries will be reviewed by the judges using a points system.  Each design will be awarded points between 1 –10 based on the evaluation criteria.  The design with the highest score will be the winner of the Gem-Empathy Award, announced at IJL and presented at the booth of the winning designer on the first day of the show.
  • The Winning Piece

The design will make use of 18k Rose Gold, Diamonds, pink & orange Sapphires as well as the Ametrine centre-stone.

The overall design is inspired by a swirl of summer colours and therefore made use of the swirl effect in the overall design of the gold.
