Gem Empathy Award

  • Gem Empathy Award- New for IJL 2016

Gem Empathy Award- Congratulations to the winner

After a successful launch last year at International Jewellery London and the winner, Sonkai (pictured right)  the Gem Empathy Award returns to IJL for the second year in its new format.

Open to those exhibiting in the design gallery, Gem-A is providing a gemstone and is asking designers to do the following: create a design that they feel celebrates the beauty of the gemstone and shows it off to its best advantage. Designers can use any material and the design can be hand sketched or created using CAD.

  • About the Gemstone:

    • 4.14ct green tourmaline.  Sourced from award-winning gem cutter, John Dyer.  (John is known world-wide for his artistic ability and passion for precision).
    • Dimensions L:20.7 x W:5.0 x D:3.0mm
    • Hardness 7 –7.5
    • Zig Zag Cut
  • Judging and Criteria

The judging panel is made up of four representatives from the jewellery industry and from Gem-A. They will judge the designs based on the evaluation criteria below:

    • Relationship between stone and design
    • Practicality of design
    • Style and beauty

    Judging procedures:

    • All designs will be reviewed independently by each judge.  If the judges do not feel that the design can be considered for the award the judge will clearly mark this on the judging form with a No.  Any designs that receive a No from ALL judges will be eliminated from the competition.
    • The remaining entries will be reviewed by the judges using a points system.  Each design will be awarded points between 1 –10 based on the evaluation criteria.  The design with the highest score will be the winner of the Gem-Empathy Award, announced at IJL and presented at the booth of the winning designer on the first day of the show.
