Emerald - The birthstone of May and Pantone colour of 2013

This stunning green stone has lots to celebrate in 2013, not only is it the birthstone for those lucky enough to be born in May, it’s also the Pantone colour of the year.

Relatively rare, the finest emeralds are worth much more than diamonds. They’re less dense, making a one-carat emerald larger than a one-carat diamond.

In 2001 the Bahia Emerald, which weighs 380 kilos, was discovered in Brazil at a whopping 180,000 carats. Claimed to be the world’s largest emerald it’s been valued at £392 million dollars, that’s approximately £254 million pounds. This National Geographic footage tells it’s amazing story.

Emeralds have been mined since the time of the Egyptians, dating back to at least 330 BC. Cleopatra used to wear them, and if they’re good enough for the queen of the Nile...

Back in the day it was believed emeralds had power to cure diseases such as cholera and malaria and to make the wearer quick-witted and intelligent. Here at IJL Towers we think they should consider giving them out on the NHS. We’d cash in our prescription for this lush green emerald ring from Harry Winston - It’s purely medicinal we promise ;-)

With a little help from Gemfields and Mila Kunis, the emerald’s popularity has increased tenfold.
